Bai Rui is proud to host multiple ITF world champion Carl van Roon for an in-depth sparring seminar in Brisbane on the weekend of 5/6 May, 2018. The seminar will centre around P.E.D., one of Coach van Roon’s favourite acronyms - Proactivity, Efficiency, Deception.

On day 1, Coach van Roon will introduce participants to essential footwork drills that build an understanding of the importance of dictating the tempo or rhythm of a sparring match (proactivity). This ability to dictate the rhythm of the match encourages the opponent to ‘march to the beat of our drum’, thereby leaving them in a reactive and unfavourable state. This training furthermore allows the sparrer to acquire positions of advantage from which they can lead with a strike or counter strike in an efficient manner.

Later on in day 1 and moving into day 2, we will further explore efficiency by breaking down individual attacking and counter attacking movements, with a particular emphasis on how deception should be incorporated into training of sparring drills for maximum effectiveness. This will again be achieved by marrying these techniques with efficient footwork to manipulate the opponent’s perception of distance, timing and angles, thereby making it difficult for them to adjust effectively throughout a match.

Finally, in a special finish to the weekend on day 2, Coach van Roon will work specifically with the World Cup sparring team to further explore and refine their understanding of these principles.
